Dominoes 110b: Plans

Grace! Grace!” The pounding on the door was insistent. Robert opened one bleary eye,
“How can they be awake already?” he whined.
“They weren’t awake as long as we were,” Grace said, rolling out of bed and pulling on a nightshirt.
“Almost,” he complained, pulling on a pair of boxers.
“Get back in bed,” she said. “They’ll want to cuddle with us. Hey kids!” she said, and the younger children piled into the room, “come cuddle?”
They did indeed ‘come cuddle’, and the bed, for the next half an hour, was rather full. Finally Mom appeared at the door, which Grace had left open, “OK, kids, get ready for breakfast.”
“Finally!” Robert said, grabbing at Grace.
“Not now, Robert,” she said. “Breakfast will be in a couple of minutes…”
“It can wait,” he said, grabbing at her again.
“No, seriously, Robert,” she insisted, avoiding him. “Mom will have breakfast all ready.”
Robert moaned, loudly, and Grace grinned at him, pulling on a nice wooly robe. Robert thought back, wistfully, to what ‘Bobbi’ had worn to breakfast, but knew that even suggesting it would ruin his day with Grace.
“Say, do I have to put on a robe?” he asked.
“No, I guess now. Dad always wears his boxers, and the boys sometimes come in their BVD’s. You never wore them to breakfast before.”
“Not here. I was never sure how it would go over. I mean, a dad is one thing, a boyfriend another.”
“Oh, well, sure. If you’re going to do it, best start that way, instead of surprising everyone after a while.
“OK,” he said, and followed her out the door.

“Well, Robert, Grace, what are your plans now?”
Grace looked at Robert, “Well, Daddy, we really haven’t had much time to work on plans. Everything came on so suddenly. I don’t want to go back to my dorm room, though.”
“No,” Robert said, flatly. “Definitely not.”
“You’re in a co-ed dorm, aren’t you dear? Perhaps you could get a different room, together?”
“They don’t allow married couples,” Robert said. “Or, at least, you have to sign something saying you aren’t sleeping together.”
“An apartment, then?”
“That will be tough,” Robert said. “Getting an apartement at this time of year.”
“You could stay here,” Dad said, causing all eyes to shift toward him.
“Well, they could,” he said. “Juliana could move to the boys room while we convert the play room.”
“Oh, that would be wonderful,” Mom said, “But wouldn’t that be hard on them?”
Grace looked at Robert. “Well, I don’t see why,” he said. “We’d be away at school a good bit of the time. We’re going to be staying at my folks for weekends and things.”
“Well, that would be just marvelous,” Mom said.
“And I have to stay with the boys?!” Juliana asked, appalled.
‘But that means that Grace will be home during the week,” Mom said, and Juliana subsided.

Dominoes 110a: Breakfast

I woke up and looked over. Caleb was still asleep, so I crept over the the computer.

BobbyBuns: He asked me!

RiverWalk: What? When?

BobbyBuns: Yesterday!

RiverWalk: Did you sleep with him, finally?

BobbyBuns: <blush>

RiverWalk: It’s about time. Maybe you’ll talk about something other than him, now.

BobbyBuns: I think I have some bad new for you. I don’t think I’ll be coming back to school.

Tess: What? Whoa!! Let me catch up here! He asked you, you shacked up, and you’re not coming to school?

BobbyBuns: We’re not ‘shacking up’! You know that!

Tess: Oh, so sorry for offending your delicate Christian sensibilities. You are engaging in intercourse with your husband. But, seriously, you’re not coming back to school? What about your degree? What about the play?

BobbyBuns: I have my ‘Mrs.’ Degree now, and you know that’s the one I really wanted. And Mr. Grumman is going to kill me, isn’t he?!

PhillipBoatman: Hey, let a cousin in on the news. Married, then?

BobbyBuns: Yeah. Oh, and there’s going to be a party. Starts today, runs all week. Everyone’s invited, OK? Tell everyone that I can’t get to.

PhillipBoatman: Even distant cousins?

BobbyBuns: Especially distant cousins. We haven’t seen you all in a while. Bring all the girls, too!

PhillipBoatman: Well, I doubt my folks will be able to come, but I can run down with the girls, if you’re sure there will be plenty of floor space for sleeping bags.

BobbyBuns: Yes, for everyone. My… old… house, Caleb’s house, every square inch. If there are too many we can ask some church friends for floor space. Our church, Caleb’s church (I’m going to have to get used to saying ‘our’ in a different way, aren’t I?) lots of space.

PhillipBoatman: Great!

JoshuaMcDeere: What? Really? To who…?

Caleb was still asleep when I finally wound down ‘sharing’, so I snuck off to the bathroom kind of hoping I wouldn’t run into Jenny, but she was sitting on top of the toilet. I think she was waiting for me. “Hey,” she said, and then blushed. I guess I did too. It was only the second time in my life I had had to face someone when I and everyone else knew that I had been…

“Hey,” I said, stripping off and getting in the shower, “did you sleep all right?”

“Yes,” she said, and then added, with a grin in her voice, “Did you?”

I didn’t answer, instead cupping my hand and launching water at her, cause her to shriek. We were having the party today , so I didn’t have time for my hair to dry, which was a shame as it was getting oily. “Are you ready for this party, Jenny? I can’t figure out what I am going to wear.”

“Well, he just bought you all those new clothes, wear some of those.”

I got out of the shower, “Do you think?”

“Sure, I mean, he just bought them for you, you just got married, you know, so something ‘for him’, kind of thing. The girls will understand, no matter how ugly they are.”

“They aren’t ugly!” I said, swatting her, then toweling vigorously off. “I have to get back to Caleb.”

I wrapped the towel around myself as Jenny giggled. I walked back to my… our room. And saw Ben and Beth, bouncing on the bed, with Caleb in the middle. “Caleb?” I said, but Ben and Beth came leaping over to me, grabbing at me and forcing me to grab my towel.

“Caleb sleeps with you now?” Beth asked, causing me to blush, although she had no idea what that meant, I mean, except for, you know, where he slept. She knew the facts of life, we taught those early, but not the logistics of it.

“Yes Beth, last night. But tommorrow night I will be sleeping over at his house. You will have to go over there to bounce on my bed.”

“Over to Caleb’s house?” Ben said, “Yeah! Will he make waffles?”

“Sure I will sport,” Caleb said, getting out of bed and picking him up, “Any time I’m home, you can come have waffles. Should I make some today?”

“Yeah!” Screamed both the twins.

“Ok,” Caleb said, “Go tell your mother that I will be down to cook right after my shower.”

The twins raced off and Robert leveraged himself out of bed, grabbing for a pair of boxers. I closed the door and dropped my towel. “Ummm, what do you want me to wear?”

“Well, we’ll be moving stuff, so something casual. Until it is time for the party.”

“No, I mean to breakfast.”

He stared at me curiously. And lustfully. “What’s wrong with what you usually wear?”

“Oh, nothing,” I said, relieved, and starting to hunt for my nightshirt. “It’s just that you wanted something different in my dream.”

“Oh?”

I stopped, and blushed. “You wanted, like, what I wore yesterday.”

“Oh! Wow! That would be awesome!”

“Oh,” I said, bright red. “Oh, Ok.”

“I didn’t mean you had to do it!” he said, hurriedly.

“You don’t want…?”

He came over and held me. “I would LOVE for you to parade around like that. But I don’t want to make you uncomfortable; or give your mom and dad a heart attack. Wear what you feel comfortable wearing.”

I pulled on a pair of boxers, and put my nightshirt over it, but I didn’t feel comfortable.. At all. I knew what he wanted but, today, I wasn’t brave enough to wear it. I went downstairs feeling like a failure. He didn’t notice, though.

“Hey Mom,” Caleb said, kissing her on the cheek, “Did the twins tell you?”

“That you were going to cook? Or that you let them bounce on your bed?”

Caleb laughed, “That I was going to cook,” He said, opening the fridge and reaching for the eggs.

“You are a brave boy,” Mother said, “acting so brave the day that everyone is coming to your house to celebrate your marriage. The day you will be the focus of everyone’s attention…”

“You cannot do it, Mom,” Caleb said, “you cannot make me upset today. Today I woke up with the most beautiful girl in the world in my bed, your wonderful daughter.”

“Waffles, waffles!” The twins yelled, coming down the stairs.

“Hey, ” He said, “I hope you all are going to help me… Hey Jenny,” he said, “I hope you all are going to help us move Bobbi today.”

“Sure,” Said Jenny, looking very cute in her little pink Pajamas. “I even asked Ralph, and he said he would come too.”

“To breakfast?” Caleb said.

“What?” Jenny said.

“Invite him to breakfast, and we’ll start right afterward. He’ll love those PJ’s.”

“You, you think so?”

“Yeah, I’ll make more waffles.”

“I, umm, you really think he will like the Pajamas?”

“I’m a guy,” he said, “I know.”

“Ok…” she said, reaching for the phone. “Ralph? Oh, Mr. Carlton, could I speak to Ralph? Ralph? Hey, do you want to come over for breakfast? We’re going to start moving Bobbi right afterwards and Caleb said… you would? Ok.”

She turned away from the phone, all pink. “He’s coming. I should change,” she said, and ran upstairs.

Caleb watched her run upstairs, “Hey, Mom, you know my technique, right? I need to do something. Bobbi, could you come with me?”

I followed after him, very confused. “Caleb?” But he just grabbed my hand and said, “We need to get upstairs and get dressed.”

“What?”

“You do know how to get dressed?” He asked, pulling me upstairs.

We dressed in a rush, and he took me outfront. A couple of minutes later an old truck drove up and Ralph got out. “Caleb? Bobbi?”

“Hey Ralph,” Caleb said, “I need to talk to you.”

“Oh?” He said, looking from one of us to the other.

“Yeah,” Caleb said, “I got married yesterday, you know, to Bobbi here. And that makes me Jenny’s brother. Now, if I had had one of my own sisters, and she started, you know, seeing someone, I would have had a talk with him. But I didn’t, so I figure I will have it with you.”

“Are you kidding?” Ralph said.

Caleb put his hand around Ralph’s shoulders, “Nope, not at all. Now, listen. I need to tell you the rules of this family. Thou shalt not, and I mean that in the Biblical sense, thou shalt not touch my sister in any way in private that you would not right in front of her mother, you got it?”

“We haven’t…”

“I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m telling you. No touching until you talk with Dad. And then, you can touch her all you want. Got it?”

“What? You mean her Dad would let me…?”

“Once you agree to marry her, yes.”

“Oh. But… you mean… we have to get married first?”

“Well, yes, but it is easy. You don’t have to go to church, or go to a judge, or nothing like that. You just go to her father, tell him that you want to marry her. And then, if he doesn’t kill you, you get to sleep with her. Got it?”

“Are you serious?”

“Life and death, life and death. Now come on inside,” Caleb said, pulling him by his shoulders, ” Too bad you didn’t come earlier. You should have seen her in her pink pajamas. They were great on her. Yould’ve been in the office with her father in minutes. Come on, dude.”

109c: In Bed

Jervis lay in his bed that night, rejoicing over the day, but extremely tired. His time with that girl, Jennifer, had been nervewracking, both before and after dinner. It had been enjoyable, but he had been panicked the whole time that his mother or, worse, her father or his father, would come in. Not Suzy, he could have talked her out of saying anything, but any of the adults. Not that they had come upstairs. He had seen Mother look at Jennifer when they had come downstairs (separately, Jennifer talking brightly with Suzy) and relax at the look on her face. If only she knew. And if only Dad would invite the Marshall’s back sometime!

109b: New. Family.

A half hour later Robert interrupted Caleb with, “Hey, I’m at Grace’s. We’ll talk tomorrow, OK?”

He parked and climbed out of his car, walking up to Grace, who was fussing with something in the back seat. He grabbed her by the waist, “Have a nice trip, my love?”

“Yes, fine. Except I am so nervous and freaked out.”

“Nervous?”

“Well, this morning I wasn’t even engaged, and here you are calling me your wife and we’ve slept together and all. I tried to explain it to my parents, but I don’t know if they understood.”

“Are they upset?”

“Oh, no! They’re excited. They just keep asking when we’re going to get married.”

“So… they think we’re engaged and sleeping together?”

“Sort of.”

“Well, we can have a ceremony if you want.”

“I think my mother will kill us if we don’t.”

“Ready to go in?”

“No!” Grace said, staring at her house. Then they saw a small hand pulling aside a curtain, and a small head look excitedly out. “But I suppose we have to.”

Robert followed Grace up to the door, where she knocked. Robert always found this bizarre. He couldn’t imagine knocking on his own parent’s door. Seconds later the door was pulled open by one of Grace’s younger brothers, and soon everyone was there hugging, kissing, shaking hands, and the like. Robert only had to suffer through it all for a few seconds, though, as Grace’s Dad, once he finally got to shake Robert’s hand and give him a ‘man hug’, kept his arm around him and pulled him away into the ‘study’, closing the door.

“So Grace tells me you two are married,” Dad said, and Robert gulped.

“Ummm, yes, you see…”

“Just a second,” Dad said, “Let me see if I understand it. You have to understand, I only got the word from her mother, who is not exactly the best at listening sometimes. Marriage, as you see it, is between the man and the woman; not the state or the church. So when you asked her to marry you, and when she accepted, that was it, you were married.”

“Well, sort of,” Robert stammered out. He agreed with his dad on this issue, but hated talking about it. Especially with his new father-in-law! “You see, it is not so much Grace and I, but the family. You, we talked about it, and you said that you would be pleased if we got married. And so I had your ‘permission’ to marry her. But we do see marriage as a binding vow in the family, not before the church.”

“And so now that you are ‘married’… well, no, let me get it right. Now that you are betrothed you can sleep together and then you will be married?”

Robert’s ears grew red and suddenly Dad laughed, “I was just teasing you. Grace told us, actually. Anyway, that is neither here nor there. We aren’t so conservative, as you know, and expected you two to start sleeping together quite a while ago. All in all I’m probably pleased she waited, though. A man like you that was willing to wait is probably better for her. Anyway, now that you’re committed, and having sex, you’re married… according to you. And I, personally, don’t have a problem with that. But it makes it a little hard on our friends, and our church. Would you be willing to have some sort of ceremony here at our church?”

“Yes, that’s no problem, as long as the pastor knows.”

“Knows?” Dad asked.

“Knows that we already consider ourselves married. As long as he doesn’t try to ‘pronounce’ us married.”

“Oh, well, that should be no problem. Your pastor understands, doesn’t he?”

“Yes. And what they are going to do….”

“A party?” Grace’s Mom asked. They were all sitting around the table eating a delicious chocolate cake, and Dad had just announced their ‘compromise’.

“To celebrate their marriage, like in the Bible,” Dad said. All of Grace’s friends, and her sister, can come and be ‘virgins’… even those that aren’t… and they could even bring lamps if they wanted. And Robert’s friends too… not with lamps. And their will be food and all, and we’ll give them a hard time. It will be great fun.”

“And the wedding?” Mom asked.

“We’ll do it there,” Dad said. “Caleb’s preacher, they call them elders, will preach some hopefully-not-too-long sermon on the importance of marriage, and then he will kiss her, and viola.

Mom looked a little doubtful that ‘viola’ was quite enough, but the younger kids all started talking about the party and she was soon in the swing of things with issues of dresses and flowers and all.

It was hours later before Dad finally said, “Well, it’s been great fun, but it’s time for bed. Upstairs everyone.”

He put, and kept, his hand on Robert’s shoulder though so Robert stayed. “Do you need protection, son?” he asked, when everyone else was gone. “I wasn’t sure if you had time to get any.”

“We… we aren’t going to use any, sir,” Robert said, gulping slightly.

“Oh?”

“I… I don’t believe in it, sir.”

“And are you ready for the, hopefully, inevitable consequences?”

“Yes, sir. My father and I talked about it and, if there is any financial problems, they will back us up. I haven’t been foolish or irresponsible with my money while I was in high school or during the summers, but have saved a good deal; mostly in gold and silver.”

“Well, I can’t say we won’t appreciate a grandchild, but you certainly are straining the limits of the cultural norms, here.”

“I’m sorry, sir.”

“No, don’t be sorry. I’m kind of proud of you. You take what you believe in and you are ready to live it out.”

“Thank you, sir.”

The two shook hands and Robert went upstairs, to a small crisis.

“Why do I have to sleep with the boys?” Justina was asking. “Why can’t I sleep in my own room with Robert and Grace? Or Robert can sleep with the boys. He’s a boy!” she said, accusingly.

Robert blushed, and was about to stammer out something about that being OK, when Grace squeezed his hand and said, “No, he can’t. We sleep together now, just like Mom and Dad. And you can’t sleep with us tonight. Maybe later. Or come in the morning and crawl in with us. Just knock first in case Robert is changing.”

“Ok,” Justina said, pouting, and went off to the bathroom with her pajamas in hand.

“Sorry about that,” Grace said, closing, and locking, the door.

“I’m confused,” Robert said, taking off his shirt. “She’s got to be what, eleven. Doesn’t she know about sex and all?”

“No,” Grace said. “My parents are kind of shy about that, and our local schools, well, you remember the lawsuit. My parents like to wait until we’ve started changing before telling us about periods, let alone sex. They had to tell Justina about periods early because she walked in on me one day while I was changing my pad. Becky knows, of course.”

Robert thought back to his own family. His mom made a pretense of modesty, for herself and, since she changed, for Jenny, but Robert had known about sex and biology since forever. He looked at Grace, who was quite worth looking at, “Are you OK with the whole no-wedding thing?” he asked.

Grace came over and helped him with his clothes. “More than OK,” she said. “I guess I had always thought of some big wedding, but it is really a waste of time, energy, and money. Besides, the party sounds good. Besides,” she said, finishing, “this was the only way I could get you into bed…”

Dominoes 109a: Whoa

Whoa,” Caleb said, an hour later, when, back sitting in bed, I finally finished my story, or at least the first pass. “That’s quite a story.”

“Not exactly what you thought we would be doing on our wedding night, eh?” I asked him.

“Well, I hope it’s not all we’ll be doing…”

Dominoes 109a,b: Back and Forth

“Well, I woke up as a girl, like I said. Except I had all of my memories.”

“I wasn’t really a boy, you understand. I was all girl physically, and emotionally. And sexually. That part was very frustrating,” I giggled. “I kept looking at my body expecting to be all turned on, and was most upset when I wasn’t.”

“And I was wearing this stupid nightgown thing. How do girls do that? It was so hot, and it got all stuck underneath me.”

“Anyway, being a boy I found my nightgown annoying, and hot. I guess,” I said, looking at Caleb, “when you sleep without wearing much you get used to your body being able to breathe. So I took it off, which was hard, since I was stupid enough to try to do it while still laying in bed. And just then Jenny knocked on my door…”

“With some story about my having to drive her to town for practice. Whatever. I was too busy trying to figure out why I felt so weird. You won’t believe how weird I felt. Looking back on it now, I understand why. I mean, I was shorter, so everything moved wrong. I had all sorts of padding in weird places. The hormones and everything were different, of course. And there is something flippy about a girls brain. Thinking was all fuzzy. It was like I was always thinking about a dozen things at once, and I couldn’t concentrate on any of them!”

“And I just hopped up and answered the door! In just my panties! I couldn’t figure out why I felt so ‘weird’; which was kind of stupid, given that I was a boy in a girl’s body. Or I could only remember being a boy, anyway. Why shouldn’t I feel weird? So I just paraded right through the hallway into the bathroom. You probably won’t find that weird, you hardly ever wear anything at home anyway. But you know how my mom feels about us girls doing it. And Jenny lectured me about it, too, believe me.”

“As if I cared! I mean here I was in this gorgeous naked body, I wasn’t even turned on, and I cared about some lecture about how girls ought to dress? In their own house! Who was around anyway? Dad, not that he would have cared, was at work, so all there was was Mom, Jenny, and the twins! And I was stupid enough to try to shower and wash all of that hair. Can you imagine? There was miles of the stuff. And all the while Jenny kept lecturing me. And Ben and Beth came in and stared at me, and didn’t say anything. I mean, except for their normal toddler stuff.”

“And then, now this was all boy, you understand, then I just couldn’t cope with my breasts. I didn’t want to wear a bra, or even a shirt. I know you boys are seriously interested in seeing naked girls, and so he, the boy bit, kept emphasizing that point… going without a bra, taking my shirt off in front of people…”

“In front of people?” Caleb asked.

“Yeah. You, in particular. You loved that part. You should have seen your eyes bug out!”

“I’m sure I did,” Caleb said, “I always will. They are truly beautiful. But you say that everyone just accepted your situation as normal?”

“Yes and no,” Robert said. “They accepted my drop-dead gorgeous body as normal; but not a bunch of my behavior. They didn’t accept my walking around without a bra as normal… I got a full second degree lecture from mom, which Jenny had to translate for me. And whenever something dream weird happened, like my stupidly re-adjusting the seat in my own, well, the girl’s own, car and almost getting in an accident, they noticed that!”

“And I told them almost immediately, of course. For some reason the boy in me didn’t want to, but I couldn’t have you and my family thinking I was someone I wasn’t. I couldn’t lie to you like that. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to have gone on for very long all by myself.

Dominoes 109b: The Drive Home

Robert drove Grace to her car and then, during the drive to her house, had time to think. This was too weird. He and Grace had had the same dream! And with an actual exchange of information.

He popped open his cell phone. “Caleb? Caleb, you won’t believe what just happened…”

Caleb listened, intently, as Robert began and then said, “I think you need to tell me exactly what happened in this dream thing. Start from the beginning, and omit no detail, however slight…”

Dominoes 109a: Dad

It felt wonderful to sing again, using my voice, my own voice, without feeling like someone else was going to shift it into Bass at any moment. Caleb even noticed and sang louder, with me. Poor Ralph looked so out of place. Caleb was glowing, and Ralph kept looking at him.

Finally the torture was over, for Ralph, and we were done singing. Mother and Jenny went upstairs, Ralph in tow, to bathe and put the twins to bed. Dad sat down on the couch, “So, Caleb, you finally popped the question? What did it take you, two weeks?”

I was just pouring myself some sparkling cider, and I almost spilled it. “What?”

“Keeping secrets from her already?” Dad asked with a grin, “an excellent policy. Sorry I spilled the beans.”

“What secret?” I asked Caleb, my hands on my hips.

“I, uhh, I asked your father a few days ago, you know, if I could marry you. When you told me to read your journal and you… well, I figured you must have figured it out.”

“Oh,” I said. “Oh.” I thought back. “Maybe I sort of did, I mean, maybe I did notice that you changed a couple of weeks back. You got even more nervous around me, even more than usual.”

Dad laughed, “Poor Caleb. But, all’s well that ends well. Somehow you finally got up the courage to ask, eh? Tell me, what did you do? Get drunk?”

Caleb flushed, “No. It was Bobbi, actually. She…” he blushed.

“Was THAT what did it?” I said. “A little peep show and you proposed?”

“No, I mean, yes, I mean…” He stopped, and took a drink of his cider. “It wasn’t that I got all hot and horny… I did, but that wasn’t it. It was just if you were willing to do that for me, just to encourage me… And then I read your journal, and realized that you were all mad at me… I knew I couldn’t wait any more. I didn’t want you mad at me.”

Dad looked quizzically at me, “Peep show?”

“I, uh, I came down to breakfast in my underwear.”

Dad raised his eyebrows, “Oh? And Caleb happened to come over for breakfast?”

“Well, I sort of invited him.”

“I see! That might do it indeed. I am surprised that my rather shy daughter did that, and that her mother allowed it. Did some girlfriend put you up to that? Or maybe your mother, getting desperate?”

“Or her mother what?” asked Mother, coming down the stairs.

“No, Mother was kind of freaked out. No, it wasn’t Mother. It was this dream I had. This really weird dream.”

Jenny and Ralph came down, “Well, I think the twins like Ralph,” Jenny said. “He tells a mean bedtime story. I didn’t think they would let us go.”

“So, what was this dream?” Caleb asked, but I blushed and shook my head, looking at Ralph and Jenny. “Oh, sorry. Maybe later.” He said, looking very awkward.

“Well, again, congratulations,” Father said, raising his glass, “may you bear us many grandchildren, and soon.”

Everyone raised their glasses, but Ralph looked confused. “Are you…” he blushed and stopped.

“Spit it out man, “Caleb said, slapping him across the shoulders. “‘What is it?”

“I mean, you aren’t married yet… are you…” he took a deep breath and, bright red, said, “Are you sleeping together?’

“Ah,” Dad said, looking back and forth between Ralph and Jenny, who was also blushing. “I guess you don’t know our strange views.”

He settled back. “In the beginning,” he intoned, and Jenny and I laughed. This was so Dad. Even Mr. And Mrs. Jones grinned a bit (I mean, the older Mr. And Mrs. Jones). “Jenny’s mother and I used to be something close to what you call ‘hippies’,” he said. “A short phase, near the end of our college careers, and not exactly our personality. But, anyway, we ‘came together’ during that time and I, at least, was loath to end our relationship when we both woke up to reality. And then we started attending church where, quite frankly, we were rather deceptive… calling ourselves ‘Mr. And Mrs.’ Even though, in our own minds and certainly if the church members had known about it, we weren’t married.”

“Two things happened after that, at almost the same time. The first was that I, we really, began to become rather attracted by this ‘Christ’ person and what he had done for us.”

Ralph nodded. He had always attended our church, I mean the church my parents and I went to. I looked at Caleb. I would be going to a new church, now. Anyway, so Ralph was fairly familiar with the gospel and all that sort of thing. We didn’t do ‘testimonies’ in main church but we were familiar with them in Sunday School and camp and all, so he was familiar with this sort of thing.

“Long story short, we got ‘saved’. But, at the same time, I was rather busy studying this whole marriage issue, and I was very unimpressed by what our culture had to say about it. Remember, I came from ‘hippy’ness, throw off societies assumptions, and all of that? So I looked at our assumptions in light of what Scripture had to say and they were all wrong, or at least I couldn’t see how they could be right. In the end I talked to the pastor about it. Poor guy, he was so excited that we had just ‘come forward’ and suddenly he was having to defend his view of a ‘church marriage’. And in the middle of it he found out we weren’t ‘married’ and he said we would have to stop living together. And I said there was no way I was doing that… Roberta was already born by then, and I wouldn’t’ have anyway, so, in the end, we had a rather abrupt departure from his church.”

“So, you aren’t married?!” Ralph asked, looking back and forth from my mom and dad, bright red.

“In God’s eyes they are, young man,” Mr. Jones said, seriously. The only thing necessary for a marriage is the permission of the father of the bride, and they had that.”

Indeed, Grandpa had been rather a hippy himself, in a very old fashioned way, and he had been thrilled with Dad. Less thrilled when they had ‘gotten religion’ but he had ‘gotten religion’ himself a few years later.

“So, yes, Dude, we’re sleeping together,” Caleb said, suddenly, causing me to blush furiously. “And so, any day now, we might make ourselves a grandkid for somebody.”

“Are you, aren’t you using protection?” Ralph asked, blushing again. “Do you want to have a child so soon?” I began to have a bit of respect for this kid. I had never really liked Jenny’s relationship with him but this conversation showed me he had some real guts.

“Protection?!” Caleb said, “Last thing in the world we need is protection!” He hugged me tight and said, “Seriously, Dude, we want children. We’ll never use ‘protection’ as you call it. Children are a wonderful gift from God, to be refused at your own peril.”

“Well, I’m glad we got that settled,” Dad said, “Now, the next question is, when is the party?”

“Party?” Ralph said….

“I have to pee,” I said. “I drank about a gallon of sparkling cider.”

The Jones were gone, Ralph had gone, Jenny had walked him out and then gone up to her room, and Mother had gone up to shower, leaving the three of us in the living room.

“Well, maybe it is time to break up our little party,” Caleb said, in what he no doubt hoped was a casual tone. A tone which failed, as Daddy laughed.

“Poor boy!” He said, “How very rude of us. Take your husband upstairs, my darling, before he explodes.” And, laughing, he got up and started putting the glasses and things away.

I looked at Caleb, who was blushing. But I had no time for blushing boys and raced upstairs. I really had to pee.

“Hey, Jenny,” I said, popping into the bathroom and racing over to the toilet. “How’s it going with Ralph?”

“Oh, fine,” she said. “He was totally freaked out by you and Caleb.” A knock came at the door,

“Bobbi?” I looked at Jenny, who shrugged,

“Come on in, Caleb,” I said. He came in, looked at Jenny in her night shirt, and stood, awkwardly, against the sink and tried to watch me while pretending not to watch me. I decided I wanted a shower, and wanted to tease Caleb, so I started to strip off. Jenny, grinning, finished brushing her teeth and went off.

I was in the shower when he pulled the curtain aside on one edge, “About that dream,” he said.

“What?”

“That dream, the one you had, the one that got you to leave me your journal and all.”

I turned toward him, “You want to know about the dream? Hardly what I thought you wanted to talk about on our first night together.” He blushed, and looked so downcast, that I reached out and kissed him, getting his shirt all wet. “I’m sorry love, I fully understand why you would want to know I went nuts this morning.”

“It all started like this…”

108c: Dinner

Jervis heard the doorbell ring and hurried down, pulling at his tie. He might get a way with ignoring his mother from time to time, but it would not pay to ignore his father. He managed to arrive at the base of the stairs, just in front of the door, before his sister and just after his mother.

“Good evening, I am James Marshall,” the man said, reaching forward and kissing Jervis’s mother and handing her a wrapped up gift, probably a bottle of wine. I’m afraid we have beaten your husband home, I saw him pull off at a service station.”

He was a powerful looking man but his wife, and his daughter, were both rather frumpy. And the girl was fat. Not horrible, though, and Jervis’s eyes ranged up and down her. The dress that she had on was obviously designed to attract boys attention, with its plunging neckline that gave ample opening for her rather full bust, and an excellent cut at the waist that drew attention to what figure she did have down there. The girl saw where he was looking (at the bust, again) and gave him a quick wink. Perhaps this evening wouldn’t be as boring as he had thought.

“Come in, come in,” Mother said, giving first the mother and then the daughter a quick kiss. “If you would like to wait in the living room, Mr. Marshall,” she said. “Perhaps your wife would like to come with me? And the kids can run upstairs and play.”

“Call me Jim,” the man said, moving, as directed, into the living room while the wife moved off with Mother; leaving Suzy, Jervis, and the girl standing at the foot of the steps.

“I’m Suzy, and this is my brother Jervis,” Suzy said, shaking the girl’s hand.

“Jennifer,” the girl said.

“Do you want to come see my room?” Suzy asked.

“Sure, lets all go upstairs and ‘play’,” Jennifer said. She had stepped farther forward and stood almost directly below Jervis, giving him even more of an eyeful. “You’re coming, Jervis?”

“Yeah,” Jervis mumbled. This was his lucky day!

Upstairs the girl feigned an interest in Suzy’s collection of dolls, and showed a little more interest in her paintings but, before Suzy was really done asked Jervis, “Do you have a room, too, or do you share with your sister?”

“Yeah, yeah I have a room, too,” Jervis said. “Down this way.”

He looked back as he led Jennifer down the hallway and Suzy was standing in her doorway, a confused look on her face. Then she turned back into her room.

“Is she gone?” Jennifer asked, looking back as they walked into Jervis’s room.

“I think she stayed in her room,” Jervis said.

“Good!” Jennifer said, pulling the door closed.

“I, umm, I’m not supposed to have the door closed. Not with you here.”

“What?”

“No, I, umm, my mother…”

“Oh, come on, you’re afraid of your mother, are you? She doesn’t look like she would hurt a fly.” So saying she finished closing and locking the door. “I was sure that this was going to be a boring evening, until I saw you undressing me,” she said, turning back to him. “I’m between boyfriends right now, so am boy hungry. Your lucky night.”

“Seriously, though, I can’t get caught with the door closed,” Jervis said, reaching over and opening it. “My dad will kill me, literally.”

Jennifer reached back and almost closed the door. “There. That’s still open, isn’t it? And we could come over here behind the door, and we’ll hear if anyone that comes up…”

108b: Dinner

I have a robe in here for you,” Robert said, rummaging through his closet. “Throw it on and we will shower, eat dinner, and then go pick up your car.”

“Ok,” Grace said. “But I don’t understand. Why don’t you just drop me off there when I go home tonight?”

“Well, that could work. Do you want us to stay there tonight, or do you want to pack some things up and come back here right then?”

Grace looked at him with her mouth open. Then she looked down at her hand, and up at him again. “I… ummm… let me think about it.” She put on the robe he handed her and the two went off to the shower.

Robert walked downstairs with Grace on his arm and his heart pounding out of his chest. He heard Mom and Jenny talking excitedly in the kitchen but it wasn’t until they reached the bottom of the stairs and turned toward the living room that he saw Father.

His face was a study; waves of alternating emotions, none of which Robert could read. His eyes, though, his eyes were grinning.

“Hey”, Robert said.

“I understand congratulations are in order, Mrs. Jones,” Father replied, after a quick glance at Robert and with his eyes turned to Grace. Grace’s hand tightened on his arm and she stammered out,

“Thank you…Father.”

And now Father was frankly grinning and came forward and hugged Grace. “However did you do it?” Father asked her.

“I don’t know that I can take much credit,” Grace said. “Robert just called me up, asked me out, and proposed.”

Father looked at me, “My Robert? Well, imagine that!”

“Well, there was some more to it,“ Robert said. “But I will not contradict my lovely wife. How was your day?”

They chatted awkwardly for a few minutes and then mother called them to the table. Beth and Ben came clattering down the stairs. “Grace!” Ben said, “It’s my turn. It’s my turn to sit next to you!”

Grace reached down and picked him up. “Really? Show me where.”

It wasn’t like it was the first time Grace had eaten with them, but Ben showed/led her excitedly to her place between Robert and himself, while Beth clung to Grace’s skirt and stared up at her. After they had prayed, and while Ben eagerly helped himself to a serving of rice, Beth asked Grace, “So, will you have babies now?’

Grace blushed and Mother hastily said, “I’m sorry dear. They were asking me all about what ‘married’ meant and I explained to them that now you are married it would be ok for you to have babies.”

Grace, her face beet red, turned to Robert, who leaned forward and said, very seriously, “She can’t have a baby just yet, Beth. You remember that it takes a long time for a baby to grow.”

“And, ‘sides,” put in Ben, his mouth full, “doesn’t happen every time, ‘member?”

Beth nodded and gravely began eating, still starring at Grace as if at any moment her stomach might start to swell. Father laughed, “As a nurse, I believe in teaching them the facts of life at a young age. It does occasionally get us in trouble with company.”

Robert didn’t know if that speech helped or not, so he changed the subject. “Great chicken, Mom!” he said. “What do you like to cook, my love?”

“Well,” Grace said, “I haven’t cooked that much, but I like ethnic food.”

“What’s ‘ethnic’ food?” Ben asked. Food was a subject dear to his heart.

“Like Chinese, or Thai, or Italian,” Grace replied. At his confused look, Robert explained,

“Don’t worry little bite, she’ll cook it all for you and then you’ll know. Thai food is spicy hot, and Italian has lots of noodles.”

“’k”, Ben said plowing forward with his chicken and gravy. Mysterious spicy food with noodles couldn’t compete for his attention with actual chicken.

Mom looked nervously at Robert. “So, you will be staying here?”

“Sure, weekends and things.” Robert answered. “I’ll free up some of my schedule and work with Chad. That will give us the money we need to commute. Unless you object?”

“Oh, no!” Mom exclaimed heartily. “No, not at all.”

“Well, good. I’ll go over Grace’s schedule. Probably tomorrow.”

Grace looked as if she was about to cry, and Mom looked nervous, but Robert didn’t seem to notice and plowed on, “Unless you think I should try for a weekend ward clerk position, Dad?”

Father looked thoughtful, “Well, no. Carpentry will definitely get you more money and I wouldn’t be surprised if Grace could help you. Then, if you do decide to go to medical school, well, I think the extra funds and the ability to work with carpentry will help you more than ward clerking.”

“Hey, that’s the idea! Caleb desperately needs a receptionist and bidder. If Grace did that he could do a lot more jobs. We could do more jobs.”

“But, I don’t know anything about carpentry,” Grace protested.

“Oh, we can teach you bidding quick enough. As a matter of fact Chat is a real computer nerd. He’ll probably work you up a spread sheet in no time.”

“You’re scaring her, dear,” Mother said.

“What?” Robert said, turning to look at Grace. “I’m sorry!”

“No, no, I’m all right,” Grace said, “It’s just that there’s been a lot of changes, I mean…”

“Well, of course. Even if you knew he was going to propose it would have been, well, a big change. But you didn’t. Robert, really why did you propose today? Come now, we are all curious.”

Robert looked askance, and Grace played with her food, her eyes teary. “Well, Ok. I’ll tell you some of it. I can’t tell you all of it. It’s too long for one thing.”

He took another bite, drank his milk off,? and said, “You see I had this dream. And in my dream, well… I couldn’t marry Grace. I didn’t even know she still existed. And then one day we met, and talked and we agreed that if I ever…”

Robert stopped as Grace had drawn in her breath and was staring at him with eyes wide. “You….you….loyalty?” she asked.

“What?!” Robert blurted out/said. “How did you know that?”

“You, you….’ Grace said and ran upstairs.

Robert looked after her, bewildered, and Father said, “Go after her. Don’t worry, this is normal. Someday I’ll tell you the story of our honeymoon.”

“George!” Mother exclaimed, as Robert got up. “You wouldn’t!”

Father’s laugh followed Robert up the stairs.

“Grace?” Robert said, knocking at his bedroom door.

“Grace opened the door, and looked around. “Come in!” she said, pulling at him. “How did you know!?!’, she whispered urgently, as she closed the door and he collapsed? on the bed, “How did you know?!?”

“Know what?” he asked.

“About my dream!”, she said, “about Roberta!”

Robert went white. “Roberta? How did you know about Roberta?”

“She was in my dream!”

“Roberta. Was. In. Your. Dream?”, Robert asked. Grace nodded frantically and sat down beside him.

“We dreamed the same dream?” Robert said wonderingly. “No wonder…”

“What?”

“That story you told me in the restaurant…”

“You already knew it!”

“You told me in the dream. Do you remember that?”

“Of course. It felt so good to be able to tell you.”

Robert mused on that for a while. Then he said, “That other boy… the one in the dream…

Grace flushed. “You…you were a girl! And besides, ” she said, accusingly,” you had a boy yourself. And you married him too!” Suddenly she looked at Robert very oddly, and he blushed, himself.

“It wasn’t me! Not that part! It was like there was someone else, a girl, and she did all of that part. I don’t even /remember/ any of that part.” Then he looked at her, “Do you?”

She flushed, and nodded. “Some. I’m sorry…”

Suddenly Robert laughed. “I can’t blame you for who you slept with in a dream! I’ve slept with… I mean boys…

Grace laughed, “I know. I’ve had those classes, you know.”

“Say, we have to get going, my folks are expecting us…” she said.
